PTI Graduate Fellows Application

The Prison Teaching Initiative invites applications from exceptional Princeton graduate student teachers and administrators from all disciplines to serve as Graduate Fellows for the 2021-22 academic year.

Position Description: PTI Graduate Fellows work closely with the Director to manage organizational operations both administratively and pedagogically. Each Fellow is responsible for the execution of 3-4 classes per semester in one division: English and Humanities, Social Science, Science, or Math. The portfolio of a Graduate Coordinator might include assisting with the hiring and training of new instructors; providing oversight over the crafting of syllabi and course materials; serving as a liaison between instructors, accreditation institutions, and the PTI office; and taking the lead on outreach and recruitment of new instructors. PTI Fellows are paid at a rate of $20/hour, and the expected time commitment is an average of 5 hours per week, including regular meetings with the PTI Director.

Past PTI Fellows have found that this role provides excellent opportunities to:

  • Apply Princeton’s commitment to civic engagement by providing educational services to a majority-minority population that has historically been severely underserved and marginalized by the educational system.
  • Reflect on and improve their own teaching practices by creating and leading pedagogy trainings for new instructors.
  • Get hands-on experience running a non-profit-like organization.
  • Work directly with public education entities (both Community College partners and Rutgers University).

Applications for this position should have taught at least one semester with PTI. We are particularly interested in candidates who enjoy working collaboratively with  graduate student leaders; are interested in learning more about best practices for student-centered, inclusive teaching; demonstrate interest in community work and issues revolving around the incarceration; and possess strong organizational skills and the ability to lead a volunteer-driven initiative.

Instructions for Application: Please submit a brief cover letter explaining your interest in the position and a CV that includes any previous teaching and administrative experience. The application portal will be open through Friday, April 16th, and applications will be considered on a rolling basis. Apply here.
